Man who tied up woman and stole cash is jailed

A SETTLED Traveller tied up a woman and ransacked her thatched cottage after asking if she needed work done on her roof. He has been jailed for three years on charges of robbery and false imprisonment.

John Joyce (49), of 1 Morgan Place, Navan Road, Castleknock, Dublin 15, was on bail for a post-office robbery when he arrived at the home of Catherine O'Meara at Sandy Lane, Boher, Co Limerick, on the afternoon of October 11, 2012.

Limerick Circuit Criminal Court heard yesterday that Ms O'Meara, in her 50s, lived in a quiet rural area with her sister, Mary. A total of €241, including money for an ESB bill, and four rings was stolen.

Saying it was a deliberate and premeditated offence which was a "horrendous experience" for the victim, the judge handed down a three-year-sentence.
