A father-of-one who smashed the front door of a city centre gym has been told to pay compensation to avoid jail.
ark McCabe (39) caused “significant damage” to the locked door by repeatedly pulling on it, a court heard.
McCabe, of Marigold Crescent, Darndale, pleaded guilty to criminal damage.
Dublin District Court heard the incident happened at the Flyefit gym on Jervis Street on April 19, 2021.
McCabe pulled the locked door a number of times, cracking the glass. He was identified and later arrested.
Separately, he was stopped stealing €68 worth of perfume from Marks and Spencer, Henry Street on April 20, 2021.
McCabe had 181 previous convictions, the court heard.
He had a history of addiction and his younger years had been blighted by drugs, his solicitor Matthew De Courcy told Judge Bryan Smyth.
He had begun “dabbling” with tablets before progressing to cannabis, cocaine and on to heroin. He had been in and out of prison but recently engaged with a methadone programme and was doing well.
The accused made attempts to save the compensation and was seeking more time, Mr De Courcy said.
