A man who claimed he was the Pope and bit a garda was allowed to fly back to Australia.

Sean McLaughlin (23) was told by gardai to go home, in Buncrana, Co Donegal, in the early hours of last Sunday.

He roared 'w*****s' at gardai. When asked for his name, he said "John Paul the Pope".

McLaughlin, of Cloontagh, Clonmany, was arrested but bit one of the arresting gardai.

Letterkenny District Court was told McLaughlin remembered little about the incident as he had been drinking heavily.

Solicitor Frank Dorrian said his client was due on a flight to Australia last night at 10pm.

Judge Paul Kelly ordered McLaughlin to pay €300 to St Vincent de Paul and agreed to strike all matters out.
