Man stole €1,000 church crucifix 'to make shrine'
A man who stole a €1,000 crucifix from a church said he stole it to lay at a shrine to his best friend who had died.
Mark Mulcaire, of McGarry House, Alphonsus Street, Limerick, pleaded guilty to stealing the cross from the Redemptorist Church, Limerick, on April 24 last.
Gardai responded to a report of a theft at the church and during a search of the surrounding area the crucifix was recovered.
Mr Mulcaire was also seen on CCTV cameras at the scene.
When later approached by gardai he admitted the theft.
His solicitor said he had gone to the church "to light a candle" for his best friend, who had passed away. "His intention was to create a shrine," he said.
Judge Eugene O'Kelly at Limerick District Court imposed 60 hours of community service.
