A man has pleaded guilty to stealing cheques worth over €26,000 from an elderly woman.

Thomas Fitzgerald, 25, of Ballinvullin, Newcastle West, Co Limerick, pleaded guilty to 12 sample charges out of 48 counts on indictment of theft of cheques belonging to local woman Kay Flynn.

Mr Fitzgerald, who did odd jobs for Ms Flynn at her home in the town, stole two of her cheque books and cashed cheques worth €26,030 at local businesses.

He pleaded guilty today at Limerick Circuit Court to stealing Ms Flynn's AIB and Bank of Ireland chequebooks and cashing them without her knowledge.

He also pleaded guilty to using cheques belonging to Ms Flynn which he knew were false instruments.

Mr Fitzgerald's barrister Mark Nicholas requested the defendant undergo a psychiatric or physiological report.

Judge Tom O'Donnell adjourned sentencing to next May.
