Man pleads guilty to drive-by gun killing

Natasha Reid

A MAN yesterday admitted killing 40-year-old Mark Moloney as he chatted on the street.

Stephen O'Sullivan (20), of Galtee View, O'Malley Park, Co Limerick had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to murdering Mr Moloney at Garryowen on April 5, 2008.

Mr Moloney was fatally shot in his back as he chatted on the street. The trial heard the drive-by shooting happened minutes after he left his partner's house.

The trial, which began three weeks ago before Mr Justice Barry White, was conducted in the absence of the jury after a legal issue arose. O'Sullivan was then rearraigned yesterday.

He pleaded not guilty to the murder but guilty to Mr Moloney's manslaughter and this was accepted by the State. He also pleaded guilty to possession of a Glock 9mm handgun.

O'Sullivan was remanded in custody for sentencing on November 29.
