Man jailed for smashing pint glass in face

A MAURITIAN man has been jailed for permanently disfiguring a man by smashing a glass into his face in a nightclub.

Moutoosomy Veerun (24) left his victim with scars across his face after intervening in a fight in Q Bar in Dublin city centre.

Judge Martin Nolan said that such assaults were among the most serious crimes the circuit court dealt with, and noted that the maximum sentence was life imprisonment. He imposed a three-and-a-half year term.

Veerun of Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing serious harm to Peter Ryan on Westmoreland Street on January 8, 2012. He has one previous conviction for a public order offence.

Garda Paige O'Connell told prosecuting counsel Gerardine Small that a fist fight broke out between some of Mr Ryan's group and a friend of the accused, causing Mr Ryan to step in and punch Veerun's friend in the face.

Veerun then smashed a pint glass in the victim's face causing him to fall over. Veerun was arrested several days later.
