Man jailed for rape of Irish woman who was celebrating her birthday
An Indian man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for drugging and raping an Irish woman.
The woman, who has not been identified, was out celebrating her 21st birthday in southern Kolkata almost five years ago when Sujoy Mitra (40) spiked her drink before raping her.
Times of India reports that Mitra befriended the woman in a bar on May 31 2013 and gave her a spiked drink, before he sexually assaulted her at his home when she was semi-conscious.
Mitra was convicted by the Alipore Judges Court on Friday and was sentenced to seven years in prison on Saturday.
His lawyers have said they are going to decide whether to appeal the sentence at a higher court.
She recorded her testimony from the Indian Embassy in Dublin in 2015, as the defence counsel objected to her doing it from her home.
The prosecution called it a landmark judgement.
They said: "It can probably open a new path for foreigners to seek justice without taking the trouble of travelling.
"The deposition was even more unique since the woman was asked to depose from the office of the Indian Embassy in Ireland."
