A Dublin man has been fined for drunkenly smashing his ex-partner's car windscreen and stealing her phone when their relationship went "sour".

Gardai arrived to find the woman's Opel Corsa had been damaged and Mark Howard (45) was in possession of her mobile phone, which had been taken without her permission.

Blanchardstown District Court heard he went on to hurl abuse at officers before he was arrested.

Judge David McHugh fined him €150 after he paid €250 compensation to the victim.

Howard pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to the windscreen of the woman's car and stealing her phone.

He also admitted public drunkenness and causing a breach of the peace in the incident at The Paddock's View, Lucan on October 12, 2014.

Sgt Maria Callaghan told Blanchardstown District Court gardai were called to the incident at 9.45pm and found the accused highly intoxicated.

An altercation had taken place in the house with his former partner.

Howard had not been drinking for 10 years but lapsed and had "absolutely no recollection" of what happened.

The defendant, of Ranelagh Road, Dublin 6, was no longer in a relationship with the victim. He had got himself "back on track" and was attending counselling.

Judge McHugh said he would accept the payment of compensation.
