Man charged with murder of Lauren O’Neill and trying to kill sister

A 26-YEAR-OLD man appeared in court this morning charged with the murder of Lauren O’Neill (18) who died on Saturday.



Phelim McNally - with an address at Station Park, Toomebridge, Co Antrim - is also charged with the attempted murder of Lauren's 21-year-old sister, Brenda, who was seriously injured in the attack.

She was still in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

They were shot at a house in William Court in Bellaghy, Co Derry, at 10am on Saturday.

Judge Barney McElholm remanded Phelim McNally in custody. He will appear before Magherafelt Magistrates' Court, Derry, via video link, on 13 June.

He spoke during the brief hearing only to confirm he understood the charges against him and no application was made for bail.

Judge McElholm said he wished to pass on the condolences of the court to the family of the deceased.
