A YOUNG man died after a pint glass was smashed over his head and the broken glass was stuck into his neck, an inquest heard.

Paul Boyle (19) was attacked at Early's Bar on Arranmore Island, Co Donegal on October 3, 2009.

Mr Boyle's family wept as the graphic details of the attack and the dead man's injuries were revealed at Letterkenny Coroner's Court. Mr Boyle, of Blohogue, Arranmore, had been socialising when he was set upon just after the national anthem. He fell to the floor and was bleeding heavily. His sister Tara told the inquest: "Paul was just lying on the floor. He was covered in blood."

In a later criminal trial, Stephen Boyle (no relation), of Ballintra, Arranmore, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter but not guilty to the murder of Paul Boyle. He was sentenced to six years in jail in April 2012.

Coroner John Cannon offered his sympathy to the Boyle family after saying their son and brother was "struck down in a cold-blooded assault".
