Man 'badly beaten with club' in hospital

A MAN was in a serious condition in hospital after being allegedly beaten with a golf club in an assault in a housing estate.

Gardai were called to the house at Tirellan Heights, Headford Road, Galway, in the early hours of yesterday and discovered the man with serious head injuries. He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

A man charged in connection with the alleged assault was refused bail when he appeared at Galway District Court yesterday.

Garda Frank Hand gave evidence of arresting Cormac Fox (45), formerly of 103 Tirellan Heights, Headford Road, at 1.20am yesterday.

He took him to Galway garda station where he was charged with seriously assaulting Anton De Barra at the home they shared, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against The Person Act 1997.

Garda Inspector Michael Coppinger advised Judge Dennis McLoughlin that the State was objecting to bail on the grounds that Mr Fox may re-offend while on bail, and that he had no permanent address, as he was no longer welcome at the house in Tirellan Heights.

Solicitor for Mr Fox, Adrian MacLynn, said that his client was not known gardai, and nor did he have any previous history of violence.

Refusing bail, Judge McLoughlin remanded Mr Fox in custody to appear before Harristown District Court, Roscommon, tomorrow.
