A judge has slammed as 'reprehensible' and 'horrific' the defacing with a blue marker of a national monument to former President Eamon de Valera.
Judge Patrick Durcan, at Ennis District Court, imposed a three-month suspended sentence on Aidan Cahill (26) of Glenview Close, Tulla, Co Clare, for the criminal damage on April 4 last.
Judge Durcan said: "This is a very serious matter."
Tara Godfrey, representing Cahill, said her client was very sorry for the offence and had since washed off the graffiti.
Judge Durcan said he would suspend the three-month jail term for one year on condition Mr Cahill keep the peace and refrain from entering the park that contains the monument.
