Man appears in court in connection with fatal stabbing in Arklow

A man has appeared before Bray District Court charged with the murder of Stephen 'Apples' Kavanagh in Arklow, Co Wicklow.

Darren Houlden (42) of The Crescent, Meadow Vale in Arklow, arrived at Bray District Court shortly after 5pm today in a dark red hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms.

He was led into the back entrance of the premises by a number of gardai and appeared before Judge David Kennedy.

He is charged with murder, which is alleged to have taken place at a property in Arklow in the early hours of Monday morning.

Detective garda Liam Flynn said that the accused made no reply when he was charged at Arklow Garda Station at 2.45pm today.

Solicitor Padraig Hyland said there would be no application for bail given the nature of the charges.

An application for legal aid was granted and Mr Houlden was remanded in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court on May 14.
