A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Stephen 'Apples' Kavanagh in Co Wicklow.

Darren Houlden (42), of The Crescent, Meadow Vale in Arklow, arrived at Bray District Court shortly after 5pm yesterday dressed in a dark red hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms.

He was led into the back entrance of the courthouse by a number of gardaí while covering his face.

The court was told that Mr Houlden is charged with murder, which is alleged to have taken place at a property in Arklow in the early hours of Monday, May 6.

Detective Garda Liam Flynn told Mr Justice David Kennedy he accused made no reply when he was charged at Arklow Garda station at 2.45pm yesterday afternoon.

Solicitor Padraig Hyland said there would be no application for bail given the nature of the charges.

A request for the disclosure of interviews was made along with an application for legal aid for Mr Houlden.

Both applications were granted.

Mr Houlden was remanded in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court on May 14.

He was then escorted out of the court and transported to Cloverhill Prison.
