A man in his 30s is set to appear before Mallow District Court this morning charged in connection with a domestic dispute that triggered the shooting of five horses and two dogs

The man is expected to appear before the court at 10:30am this morning.

The man, in his 30s, was arrested in the Kanturk area of north Cork after a massive Garda manhunt over the previous eight hours. The manhunt involved uniformed gardaí supported by members of the armed Regional Support Unit (RSU).

The incident began in the early hours of yesterday when a domestic dispute erupted at a property outside Newmarket.

It is understood the man had a row with his girlfriend, who is a foreign national.

Another family member was alerted and apparently attempted to calm the man, who was becoming extremely agitated. However, the row escalated and the man armed himself with a shotgun. He then shot two dogs and five horses outside the property.

The man then fled in a Toyota car which he later crashed. He then walked across fields and woodland while armed with the shotgun.

Gardaí were alerted and began a major search operation, focused on the Newmarket and Kanturk areas. Around noon, he was spotted outside Kanturk. Gardaí rushed to the scene and the man agreed to surrender.

He was arrested without incident and no one was injured.
