Legal eagle with political background
POLITICS and the law have played important roles in the life of Circuit Court judge Patrick McCartan (below).
Judge McCartan who turns 60 in May, was born in Dublin and educated at St Peter's College in Wexford and UCD, graduating with a law degree.
He was previously an active member of the Divorce Action Group, Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement and CND, the campaign for nuclear disarmament.
He was elected as a TD for the Workers Party in the 1987 election.
In 1992 he resigned to form a new party which became Democratic Left.
After he lost his seat in 1992 he returned to the law and five years later he joined the bench.
