Journalist killer's sentencing moved

THE sentencing of the killer of journalist Eugene Moloney, right, has been brought forward because it falls on the anniversary of Mr Moloney's death, writes Conor Gallagher.

Gary Burch (21) of Kennington Close, Templogue, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the unlawful killing of Mr Moloney on Camden Street on June 24, 2012.

Last month, Judge Mary Ellen Ring set a sentence date for June 24, with the consent of both parties. Yester-day, the prosecution said this date was exactly a year after the killing and was unsuitable "for obvious reasons".

Judge Ring said she would deal with the matter "whenever the parties are ready" and put the matter in for June 17 next.

Prosecuting counsel Pieter Le Vert requested facilities for the judge to view CCTV footage of the night of the killing.

Last month, Mary Rose Gearty, defending, asked for the case to be adjourned for a number of weeks to allow her client to complete a Fas course.

She said Burch had no previous convictions. He was granted bail before Christmas and has abided by the conditions.
