A MAJOR cannabis cultivation operation has been discovered by gardai who seized 600 plants capable of producing drugs worth €500,000.

Officers from Kilrush garda station made the seizures during a search of a house at Breaffa, Carraigaholt, Co Clare. They also found 500 empty pots from recently harvested plants. The seized plants will be subject to further analysis. The house and its surrounding property was sealed off by gardai. A technical examination by forensic officers was being carried out last night.

ACCUSED IN HOSPITAL

A MAN who allegedly drove a car into a dole office after a garda chase was unable to appear in court as he has been in hospital since the alleged incident, a judge has been told.

Joseph McGonigle (40), from Aught Road, Muff, Co Donegal, was due to appear at Buncrana District Court on several charges. When the case was called yesterday, the accused was charged with one count of drinking and driving and two counts of dangerous driving in Buncrana on December 27. The case was adjourned until April 10.

CYCLIST IN COLLISION DIES

A CYCLIST in his 40s has died in hospital after an accident at Castletroy outside Limerick, which happened on Wednesday.

The man was injured in collision with a car at Kilmurray roundabout at 2pm, and was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where he died yesterday. The driver of the car was uninjured.

ESCAPE FOR FISHERMEN

FOUR fishermen had a narrow escape when their trawler engine failed and the vessel went aground near Kilmore Quay, Co Wexford.

Kilmore Quay lifeboat was launched to tow the Wexford trawler, Lida Suzanna, to safety yesterday. No one was injured in the incident.

FIREARM CHARGE

A woman appeared in court charged in connection with a shooting at a doctor's surgery. Geraldine Smith (52), of Belmont Heights, Ferrybank in Waterford city, is alleged to have fired three shots into the Ferrybank branch of Keogh's Surgery, a popular general practitioner that has its headquarters at Ballybricken.

Smith was charged with the reckless discharge of a firearm. The incident is alleged to have happened at 1.30am on December 23, 2012. The court heard that the surgery, on Fountain Street in Ferrybank, was empty at that time of the shooting. The matter was adjourned to February 20.
