A GRANDMOTHER roared and shouted at the man accused of the murders of her daughter and two grandchildren in a packed courtroom yesterday.
At Newcastle West District Court, Abina Hines came face to face for the first time with John Geary (31), who is accused of the murder of his ex-partner, Sarah Hines (25), her son Reece (3) and daughter Amy (five months).
Mr Geary, with an address at 31 Meadowcourt, Newcastle West, Co Limerick, is also charged with the murder of Alicia Brough (20) at 18 Hazelgrove, Gortboy, Newcastle West, on November 15 last.
At Mr Geary's appearance in court yesterday, Ms Hines stood up throughout the short hearing in a bid to get a better look at the man accused of the four murders. Her partner, Peter Rolfe, sat alongside her as well as the parents of Alicia Brough -- Paul and Maria Dempsey.
As Mr Geary was being led away from the courtroom by gardai, Ms Hines began shouting at him from the back of the courtroom.
"Scumbag, you murdered my family. I'm going to f**king destroy you. Do you hear me," she said.
Sporting a beard and wearing a black hoodie, Mr Geary remained silent during the brief hearing. Supt Dan Flavin of Newcastle West garda station asked Judge Mary O'Halloran to remand the accused in custody until February 1.
The case was adjourned until next month.
