HSE official pleads guilty to €170,000 theft

A HSE official has pleaded guilty to 11 charges relating to the theft of more than €170,000 after an investigation into financial irregularities at a Cork hospital.

David Cooper (52), of Southern Road, Cork, was before the Circuit Criminal Court charged with 11 counts relating to fraud at St Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital last June and July.

Sinead Behan, for the accused, made an application that a psychiatric report be made to the court. She said her client was being cared for by a psychiatrist.

Claire Hyland, for the State, made an application for a compensation order for businesses left out of pocket by the fraud.

Judge Patrick Moran granted both applications and adjourned the case for sentence on April 30.
