Home birth midwife is reinstated to practise
HOME birth midwife Philomena Canning said she is delighted to be able to return to practise after being suspended by the Health Service Executive for over five months on no grounds.
"This has been the most challenging months of my life as a single midwife battling for my rights and reputation," she added.
She was speaking after it was confirmed that solicitors for the HSE wrote to her legal team saying the "necessary foundation no longer exists for the continuation of the temporary suspension of your client's clinical indemnity insurance".
The case came before the High Court after Ms Canning challenged the withdrawal of her professional indemnity. The HSE said while no issues of wrongdoing were made against her, it had to act in the interests of public health until an investigation into two incidents was completed. Several home-birth mothers turned up at the court to show her their support and trust.
