A 77-year-old great-grandmother is recovering today after she was shot in the leg at her home in South Dublin.

May Brown was in her home in Monkstown with her six-year-old great grandson when a gunman called to her house and fired a number of bullets at her, hitting her once in the lower left leg.

The shooting occurred at Oliver Plunkett Avenue in Monkstown at approximately 11.05pm on Thursday night. Mrs Brown is undergoing treatment for her injuries at St Vincent's Hospital.

Investigating gardaí do not believe Ms Brown was the intended target. It is understood that a young man - who is known to the pensioner - may have been the target of the gunman.

The young man has been in a bitter dispute with local drug dealers which led to an assault earlier this week, a number of nights before Thursday's shooting.

Mrs Brown - who is widowed - has absolutely no involvement in this dispute and is considered an "extremely decent lady."

She was shot by a lone gunman who knocked on her front door.

When she opened the door, the gunman did not speak but opened fire with a handgun, hitting her in the left leg.

A number of shots were fired at the widowed old-age pensioner, but she was only hit once.

The gunman then fled the scene on foot. Gardaí are currently seeking information as to what direction he went in or whether he was picked up in a getaway car.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by Dun Laoghaire gardaí and yesterday Superintendent Martin Fitzgerald appealed for information in the case which he described as "highly unusual" and "very callous."

"We believe that the [Mrs Brown] was injured from one discharge from the firearm although we believe there were multiple shots discharged at the scene by the lone gunman," he said.

"There were no words of exchange from the culprit who did not speak throughout the particular incident.

"In terms of a description what we're working on at this moment of time is a male in dark clothing.

"We have no assessment as to what age he is, but he has a height description of 5ft 7 and 5ft 10," Supt Fitzgerald explained.

Neighbours living around the quiet cul de sac where the shooting took place said they were shocked at what had taken place. One neighbour described Ms Brown as "salt of the earth".
