Girl (8) awarded €28k after suffering night terrors and anxiety following car accident
A girl who was aged five when she was showered with glass in a car accident has been awarded €27,860 in damages in the Circuit Court.
The child, now aged eight, went on to suffer psychological issues for two years after the car in which she was a passenger collided with another vehicle in July 2013, Letterkenny Circuit Civil Court heard.
She suffered a number of cuts in the Co Donegal crash but recovered quickly from those injuries.
However she began to suffer night terrors, became aggressive when playing with her toys and suffered anxiety when she wasn’t with her mother, the court heard.
Judge John O’Hagan said the medical reports had shown the girl had suffered a “rough time” over the past couple of years.
He said he had no hesitation in approving a compensation offer of €27,860, noting the girl was probably “sick of seeing doctors and psychologists” since the accident.
He ordered that €250 of the money be released to the child’s parents to buy her a present and ordered the remainder of the compensation to be invested by the Four Courts until the girl turns 18.
