An 11-year old girl who allegedly suffered a shoulder injury at birth has settled her High Court action for €250,000.

Keelan Murray, the court heard, has difficulty reaching the back of her hair to tie it up and has to use her left hand to write.

Keelan, through her mother Sharon Murray, of Seasons Park, Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, sued the National Maternity Hospital as a result of injures allegedly sustained at her birth in January 2004.

It was claimed Keelan was caused to suffer Erb's Palsy and, that having diagnosed a shoulder dystocia, traction was allegedly applied in order to effect delivery.

The claims were denied.

Mr Justice Kevin Cross was told the settlement was without an admission of liability.

Eugene Gleeson SC said Keelan is a very bright young girl who plays sports, but she had to have surgery to the shoulder in the past.

Approving the settlement Mr Justice Cross said it was a very prudent settlement.

He wished the young girl well for the future.
