Gilligan facing Christmas in jail after bail denied
Criminal John Gilligan faces spending Christmas behind bars after his latest bail application was refused.
Gilligan (66) has been in custody at Maghaberry jail in the North since his arrest at Belfast International Airport on August 23 with €23,000 in a suitcase.
Yesterday, his barrister told Coleraine Magistrates' Court that his client had been on remand for 115 days and he was making a bail application on the basis of a "delay" in the case.
A National Crime Agency investigator told the court an International Letter of Request was still going through various departments, including the Home Office, which would then send it to gardaí. He said he wanted information from the Republic as the defendant was facing a "money laundering" offence.
Judge Liam McNally refused bail, and said that if a timetable for the case was not forthcoming in January, bail could be revisited.
