Garda killer McDermott jailed in North for offences committed after his escape

A 26-year-old-man, who recently escaped from a low security Cavan prison, has been jailed in Northern Ireland for four months.

The offences, including assaulting PSNI officers and resisting arrest, came after he escaped to Derry from the Loughan House prison in Blacklion.

McDermott pleaded guilty to the offences at Derry Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced to four months in jail.

He escaped from Loughan House while serving a sentence for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin, in Burt, Co Donegal, in 2009.

The court was told a European Arrest Warrant had been issued by gardai for McDermott and the warrant will be executed at a later date.
