A former international cricket star has appeared in court charged with not paying for a €21 meal.

Rodney Ontong - who played for both South Africa and captained Glamorgan County Cricket Club in the 70s and 80s - was brought before Dublin District court this morning.

Garda Seamus Donoghue gave evidence that the 61-year-old, of no fixed abode, attempted to leave Flanagans Restaurant on Dublin's O'Connell Street on Sunday night without paying for his meal.

Evidence was heard that the meal was valued at €21.80.

He was arrested and questioned at Store Street station.

A judge remanded Mr Ontong on continuing bail and he is due to appear again before Dublin District court on June 19.

The court heard that if he pays the money then the charges against him will be struck out.
