Father accused of assault and theft

A FATHER-of-three has been charged with the assault of a female photographer.

Dermot McArdle (41) yesterday appeared at Dundalk District Court, in Co Louth, on charges of assault and the theft of a camera. Factory manager McArdle, of Brookfield, Marlbog Road, Dundalk, is alleged to have assaulted photographer Jenny Matthews close to his home on January 9, contrary to Section 2 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the State Act.

It is also alleged that at the same time and location he stole from Ms Matthews a Canon EOS 30D camera, with a 150mm lens, valued at €2,000.

Garda Brendan Duffy gave evidence of arresting McArdle and bringing him to Dundalk garda station where he later charged him. He said that when the charges were put to him, McArdle replied: "No comment." McArdle's solicitor Frank McDonnell asked for the case to be adjourned.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned proceedings until April 14 next.
