Ex-sports coach denies sex offences

Gordon Deegan

A FORMER sports coach has denied three counts of rape against a male more than a decade ago.

At Ennis District Court yesterday, the 70-year old man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – appeared charged in connection with five alleged sex offences, including three counts of rape.

The court heard that the man issued various denials to the alleged rapes when charged and cautioned.

Garda Michelle Holian said that the man replied: "That's totally untrue. That never happened," when charged with committing rape on the male between January 1999 and September 2000.

In respect of a second count of rape on the same male during the same period, the man responded after caution: "I totally deny that too.".

In relation to the third count of alleged rape on the same male, the man replied: "I totally deny that also."

Judge Patrick Durcan granted legal aid and remanded the accused to appear before Ennis District Court for October 16 when a Book of Evidence is expected to be served.
