Ex-lover of tragic Katy is banned for drink driving

THE millionaire former boyfriend of model Katy French has received a three-year ban after driving a luxury Rolls Royce while over the alcohol limit.

Jimmy Mansfield Jnr, the son of high-profile developer and Citywest owner Jim, was stopped by gardai on September last 19 last year on the Naas Road near the hotel in Dublin. He was driving his father's Rolls Royce Phantom.

Dublin District Court heard that officers had stopped the businessman after observing him driving erratically.

"There was a strong smell of alcohol from his breath and his shirt was also dishevelled," Gda Jason Courage said. "He said, 'I'm as drunk as a f***ing fool'."

Mansfield (44) said he "just wanted to get home to Palmerstown" -- the luxury Palmerstown House at Johnstown, Naas, Co Kildare, where he lives.

He was arrested and breath samples taken at Ballyfermot garda station found that he had readings of 70mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, twice the legal limit. He was released on bail, before appearing in court on Monday of this week.

Mansfield's solicitor contested the case on technicalities -- which included arguing that the garda statement given to the defence did not contain all the information he gave in direct evidence.

But Judge Ann Watkins said the omission only prejudiced Mansfield's case in that if it had been included the accused might have pleaded guilty.

She offered Mansfield a chance to change his plea but he declined. The court heard that he had no previous convictions.

Passing sentence, Judge Watkins fined him €2,500 and banned him from driving for three years.

Speaking briefly outside the court, Mansfield indicated that he would appeal the conviction. Efforts to contact him yesterday were unsuccessful.

Shortly after Ms French's sudden death, it emerged that Mansfield had been in an "on-off" relationship with the model for 10 months.
