A DRUNK driver stood in the slow lane of a busy motorway after he got out of his car, a court heard.

Ademola Ajayi (25) was stopped after gardai saw his car swerving dangerously on the M1.

Judge Dermot Dempsey banned Ajayi from driving for three years and fined him €700. He said he was lucky the M1 was not busier.

The defendant, of The Square, Riverbank, Drogheda, Co Louth, admitted before Swords District Court to drink-driving at the M1 northbound at 8am last March 7.

Gda Paul Colton said he received a report of some- one driving dangerously on the M1.

Gda Colton said he saw the car, which was swerving between lanes.

He indicated for the vehicle to stop but Ajayi did not initially acknowledge the patrol car, so he pulled alongside him.

Gda Colton said Ajayi eventually stopped 1km south of the Lusk exit.

He said Ajayi got out of the car and stood in the middle of the slow lane, and for his own safety he was arrested.

Ajayi later provided a blood sample that gave a reading of 241mgs of alcohol per 100mls of blood.

Defence solicitor Fiona D'Arcy said the defendant works as a warehouse operative and a ban will cause him problems getting to work.
