Drama as mother collapses in court

Ralph Riegel

THE mother of a garda jailed for six months for assault yesterday collapsed and had to receive medical attention in Cork's Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Sean O'Donnabhain had to rise from the bench and go to his chambers after imposing a six-month prison sentence on Dean Foley (25), a Bantry-based garda, for assault causing harm.

The garda -- who has been suspended for almost two years -- had minutes earlier made an emotional plea for leniency after saying the incident had destroyed his life and career.

Immediately after sentence was imposed and the garda was led away into custody, his mother and girlfriend broke down and began to weep in the public gallery. His mother then attempted to stand, only to collapse screaming on to the floor. Despite attempts to comfort her, she had to receive medical attention from paramedics.

The distraught woman was then helped from the Cork courthouse some 20 minutes later.
