Customs seize €3m worth of smuggled cigarettes
A CHILLED container carrying €3.1m worth of illegal cigarettes has been seized in Dublin Port.
Customs said about eight million cigarettes, branded Top Mountain, Bon International, Royal and Jim, were found in the shipment from Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The consignment was uncovered yesterday after being checked by a mobile scanner.
Customs said the container had been described as chilled foodstuffs and the black market cargo was packed into boxes labelled Garlic & Cheese Tear & Share.
An Irish-registered lorry and a refrigerated trailer were also seized.
The driver, an Irish man in his mid-40s, was interviewed by Customs.
Some 89.5 million contraband cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officials this year.
