Cruelty case complex and complicated, court told

Brian McDonald

Gardai have said that an investigation into complaints against a mother for cruelty and neglect of her children are "complex and very complicated".

The 45-year-old Co Galway woman has been charged with 18 counts of neglecting her children or treating them in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury between 2002 and June of last year.

Her husband faces almost 300 charges, including rape, buggery and indecent assault of four of his daughters and two counts of neglect and cruelty towards his son.

Garda Mary Hession told Athenry District Court yesterday that new statements had been taken and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the case against the woman. The investigation was complex and very complicated, the court heard.

Judge Joseph Mangan was advised that the book of evidence would take about three weeks to complete. He remanded the woman in continuing custody to appear again at Athenry District Court on March 9.
