Crash survivor in court charged in relation to eight deaths

THE sole survivor of a crash in which eight people were killed has been charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths.

Shaun Kelly (22) of Hill Road, Buncrana, appeared at Buncrana District Court in Donegal yesterday before Judge Paul Kelly charged in relation to the deaths on July 11, 2010.

Mr Kelly was driving a Volkswagen Passat on the night of the crash. Seven of those who died were in the Passat. They were: Mark McLaughlin (21), Fahan; Paul Doherty and Ciaran Sweeney (19), Ballyliffin; Patrick McLaughlin (21), Burnfoot; Eamonn McDaid (22), Damien McLaughlin (23), Buncrana; and James McEleney (23), Clonmany.

Hugh Friel (66) from Urris was also killed in the crash. He was on his way home from bingo when the accident happened.

Mr Kelly is to appear again before Buncrana Court on December 8.
