The Mayor of a county council has been charged with a drink-driving offence.

Cllr Ciaran Brogan, (43), is charged with being in charge of a mechanically propelled vehicle while exceeding the alcohol limit on June 22 last year.

The Fianna Fail politician, the Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council is alleged to have committed the offence at Ballymacool, Letterkenny.

Cllr Brogan did not appear in court when it was briefly mentioned on March 21.

The case is being brought by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Defence solicitor Kieran O'Gorman sought a statements order on behalf of the politician.

Judge Paul Kelly granted the application and adjourned the case at Letterkenny District Court until June 20.
