A prisoner who posted to Facebook while on-the-run for six days is back in custody.

The 22-year-old gave himself up yesterday evening and has been returned to Limerick Prison, the Irish Prison Service confirmed.

The Limerick man begun updating his Facebook page following his escaped from Ennis Disctrict Court last Wednesday when he left through a back door of the court house.

The man escaped alongside a fellow prisoner (18) when they were left alone to eat some food.

The pair walked out the back door of the building and made a run for freedom at approximately 3.15pm last Wednesday.

Gardaí captured the 18-year-old shortly afterwards near the town's centre but were unable to locate the second prisoner.

On Thursday, the 22-year-old posted on his Facebook page: “Who else is out today haha” after changing his profile picture."

On Friday, he updated his profile with two photos of himself wearing an Adidas tracksuit.

Several of his friends posted messages of encouragement to the 22-year-old, with one describing him as a “legend”.

Another posted a picture of the film Catch Me If You Can and urged him to watch it, while one friend warned the Limerick man to keep a low profile.

“U never fail to surprise me stay off tis pal,” they said.

The Irish Prison Service confirmed that the 22-year-old returned to the Mulgrave Street jail at approximately 7pm on Monday, and that a number of prohibited items, including a mobile phone, were found concealed on him during a search.

It is understood he may face additional charges in relation to his escape and the items seized by Gardaí.
