A clubber knocked another man unconscious on the dance floor and continued to hit him after he had fallen, a court heard.

Doug Carton (20) carried out the attack after the pair had an argument in the club.

Judge Michael Walsh ordered him to pay just under €4,000 compensation and adjourned the case for a restorative justice programme report.

Carton, of Sandyford Downs, Sandyford, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm.

Dublin District Court heard the incident happened at Everleigh Garden nightclub on June 28 last year.

The victim and a friend were socialising at the club and the defendant was in the company of his own friends.

In the course of the night and early hours of the morning, the accused and the victim had an altercation.

There was a further row on the dance floor, during which Carton struck the victim in the face.

He was knocked out and fell to the ground, where Carton hit him several more times while he was still unconscious, the court was told.

The man was helped up by security and found to be bleeding heavily from the head and mouth.

Carton and the victim had not known each other before and it "appeared to be an altercation in the club which escalated into physical violence", a garda sergeant said.

The victim's period of unconsciousness lasted for a "few seconds".

A medical report reflected the nature of the injuries, the court heard.

The victim was not in court, but his mother was present and she said she "just hoped the accused learned his lesson".

"My son is very lucky," she added.

Carton had worked to raise €1,000, which he brought to court, his lawyer said.

Judge Walsh noted the victim had suffered medical costs, loss of income and other expenses totalling €1,955.

He said it was "by any yardstick a serious assault".

As well as the injuries he suffered, the victim had a significant amount of out-of-pocket expenses.

The judge said if the def-endant paid €3,955 in total he would look at favourably disposing of the case.
