A reveller jumped up onto the bonnet of a new BMW car and ran up and down it after he left a city centre club.

Kevin Dunster (20), who had been drinking heavily, caused €5,000 damage to the car, which belonged to the owner of the nightclub that he had just left.

The BMW owner indicated to a court that he had had to pay for the damage himself, as it would have affected his insurance premium.

Judge Fiona Lydon ordered a restorative justice services report and adjourned sentencing to a date in July.

Dunster, of Thomastown Crescent, Sallynoggin, Co Dublin, admitted criminal damage.

Dublin District Court was told that Dunster left the Academy Club on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1, at 4.10am on June 9, last year.

The owner of the club was leaving the venue at about the same time, and his 151-registered car was parked outside on the street.

A garda sergeant said the defendant jumped up onto the bonnet and roof of the BMW and ran up and down the vehicle.

Security staff from the club stopped Dunster and he was held until gardai arrived at the scene.

The defendant took responsibility for the damage that he caused.

The court was told that Dunster had never been in trouble before.

Defence solicitor Murrough O'Rourke said he had previously worked as a merchandiser in supermarkets, but he lost his job in February.

Mr O'Rourke said Dunster had had a lot to drink on the night in question, having drunk three or four cans of beer at home and then drinking "quite a number of spirits" in the nightclub.

He said his client had no explanation as to why he had jumped up on the car.

He added that Dunster was willing to pay some compensation for the damage he caused.
