A brother and sister have been charged in connection with the murder of a musician.

Keith Brady (28) was yesterday charged with the murder of Martin 'Matt' Kivlehan.

Detective Inspector Tom Colsh told the judge he charged Brady with murder and he replied: "I just want to say I'm very sorry for what happened.

"I never meant anything to happen. To this day I still don't know what went wrong."

His sister Janice Brady (26) has been charged with preventing his prosecution for murder.

Mr Kivlehan (59) was stabbed to death on August 3 last year in his apartment in Holborn Street, Sligo.

Keith Brady, with an address at Cartron Estate, Sligo, appeared yesterday before Judge Kevin Kilrane at Sligo District Court. Det Insp Colsh asked for a remand in custody to Harristown District Court today while the prosecution prepares the book of evidence.

Defence lawyer Keith O'Grady told the court that Brady was already serving a sentence for other offences and there would be no application for bail.

He had a long and serious history of drug misuse. Judge Kilrane granted legal aid and instructed that addiction and psychiatric assistance be made available to Brady. He remanded him in custody to Harristown District Court.

Janice, also of Catron Estate, Sligo, was charged on Wednesday in Dublin District Court with impeding the apprehension and prosecution of Keith for murder.

She was also remanded in custody.
