Brain-damaged girl (7) gets €2m settlement
A GIRL (7) allegedly brain damaged at birth yesterday secured €2m in part settlement of a High Court action against the HSE.
Brid Courtney brought the action through her mother Deirdre Courtney, of Killeacle, Ardfert, Co Kerry.
The settlement was without admission of liability.
Mr Justice John Quirke approved the part settlement and adjourned the case.
In the action, it was stated that her mother was admitted to Tralee General Hospital in Kerry on February 24, 2003.
During labour, it was claimed, the hospital failed to consider the dangers associated with a sudden and dramatic change in the foetal heart rate pattern. It also allegedly failed to deliver the baby as speedily as possible causing the infant to sufferer brain damage.
As a result Brid is profoundly physically disadvantaged.
