Boxer goes to court over axing from elite squad
AN Irish champion youth boxer has taken a High Court challenge against a decision to drop him from an upcoming European competition.
Michael O'Reilly (17), from Portlaoise, Co Laois, yesterday got permission to bring proceedings against the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) after being omitted from a squad taking part in the European Youth Championship next week.
Permission to bring the proceedings seeking an injunction against his dropping from the team was granted by Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne, and the matter is back before the court today.
In an application to the court at which the other party was not present, lawyers for Mr O'Reilly, who boxes for the Portlaoise Club, explained that earlier this month he had been taking part in a training camp at the National Stadium in Dublin.
On August 5, a vehicle belonging to Mr O'Reilly was damaged in an underground car park near the stadium.
He rang a coach to see if he could be excused from the camp to organise repairs, and claims he secured approval.
However, he claims he was subsequently removed from the Irish team as a result of his non-attendance. The IABA disputes Mr O'Reilly's account.
