Appeal for witnesses as man (70s) dies following rush hour collision

An elderly man has died following a fatal collision between a car and an articulated truck.

The collision took place on the N2 on approach to Carrickmacross, Monaghan - close to McCaughey's service station - shortly before 5pm today.

The driver of the car, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The driver of the truck was taken by ambulance to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The scene is expected to remain closed overnight to facilitate a forensic investigation by gardaí. Local diversions are in place.
