€23,000 stolen in friend's name

A Dublin man falsely claimed over €23,000 in jobseeker's allowance by using the social services swipe card of a friend, a court has heard.

Michael Cawley (36) who was also in receipt of jobseeker's allowance, made the claims in the name of Thomas Mongan from January 2009 to May 2011.

Cawley, of Rivermeade Avenue, Swords, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to six counts of stealing money from the Department of Social Protection at Malahide Post Office on dates between February 20, 2009, and May 26, 2011.
