Couple scoop €5,000 quality milk award
A HUSBAND and wife team who supply the creamy milk needed to make Baileys Irish Cream have scooped the top prize at a major dairy awards ceremony.
The event was marked by a protest by hardcore vegans who daubed the entrance with posters slamming the milk trade.
David and Kathleen Cassidy from Coppenagh, Lisnagar, Cootehill, Co Cavan, won the National Dairy Council and Kerrygold Quality Milk award worth €5,000.
Mr Cassidy took over the farm from his father in 1984, and the family has been supplying the grade-one milk required year-round to make Baileys Irish Cream, with a herd of 80 pedigree cows. The award was presented by hurling star Henry Shefflin in the RDS yesterday.
However, animal-rights protesters turned out at the event claiming the dairy industry is cruel to cows.
