TWO people were lucky to escape with their lives last night when a small helicopter crash-landed and ended up on its side in a field.
A man and woman were on board the Robinson 22 chopper when it apparently got into difficulties about five miles east of Sligo town.
The 31-year-old pilot -- named locally as Ronan Maguire, who lived nearby -- and a 19-year-old passenger were on board the two-bladed, single-engine helicopter, which is pictured right.
Incredibly they survived the crash landing. An eye witness who arrived at the scene soon after said the survivors had "a miracle escape".
Members of the air-accident investigation unit were at the scene last night but there was no initial indication of what went wrong.
One of the survivors was believed to have suffered a slight wrist injury. The pilot alerted gardai to the incident and last night he was
assisting Air Accident Investigators, with their inquiries.
