Counties get reg plate makeover
THREE counties will get changes to vehicle registration plates next year due to local authorities merging as a result of local government reforms, writes Cormac McQuinn.
Tipperary, Limerick and Waterford will now be 'T', 'L' and 'W' on number plates.
It ends the registration system where 'TN' and 'TS' referred to the north and south Tipperary administrative areas and 'LK' and 'WD' plates were from Limerick and Waterford county, rather than city council administrative areas.
Finance Minister Michael Noonan announced the changes as he responded to a parliamentary question from Tipperary North TD Noel Coonan.
He said the reg changes are "not expected to have an impact on either motor dealerships or motorists".
