A popular councillor and father-of-three who was left fighting for his life in an induced coma after he collapsed is doing well in hospital.

Athlone Cllr John Dolan (FG) was rushed to Galway University Hospital earlier this month after collapsing from a mystery illness at his home.

The dairy farmer, who is in his late 40s, was placed in an induced coma but it is unknown what caused his shock collapse.

His colleagues rallied around Mr Dolan sending their well-wishes as the father-of-three fought for his life in hospital.

Cllr Tom Farrell told Independent.ie that Cllr Dolan is recovering well.

"It's good news. He is in recovery mode but it will still take a lot of time.

"He's improving slowly and he's starting to communicate again.

"Hopefully he'll make a full recovery and pull through."
