Council votes against sale of Magdalene laundry site
Dublin city councillors have voted to halt the proposed sale of the last remaining Magdalene laundry in State ownership which is located in Dublin's north inner city.
At a special meeting last night councillors voted 37 to eight in favour of retaining ownership of the institution on Sean McDermott Street. There were two abstentions.
The building was transferred to the ownership of Dublin City Council when it closed its doors in 1996.The council had considered selling the two-acre site to a Japanese hotel chain.
However survivors of the laundries and other critics said they wanted the institution kept as a memorial to the women who lived grim lives within its walls.
Some survivors applauded from the public gallery when the result of the vote was read out. The council has yet to determine what it will do with the site.
